Rocky Mountaineer named Best Sustainable Train Journey by Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel Awards

Global travel authority Lonely Planet has today unveiled its much-awaited Best in Travel picks for 2021, reflecting an unprecedented year of disruption in the travel industry.

Rocky Mountaineer is proud to have won Best Sustainable Train Journey category.

For the 2021 awards, Lonely Planet was looking at the important changes taking place globally, from sustainability to diversity, and shining a light on the individuals shaping the future of travel. This year, the Best in Travel list showcases transformative travel, which encourages travellers to find authentic and mindful moments during their journeys. Rocky Mountaineer has been singled out as one of the organizations transforming the travel industry.

Rocky Mountaineer offers luxury train journeys that showcase some of the most spectacular scenery North America has to offer. Rocky Mountaineer offers three rail routes in Western Canada that connect Vancouver to the Canadian Rockies towns of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. It is a must-do travel experience that offers unparalleled journeys in its spacious glass-domed train coaches thanks to the incredible scenery, delicious cuisine, friendly service, and social atmosphere.

Rocky Mountaineer has been awarded for its efforts to reduce carbon emissions, decrease wastage and increase on-board recycling, and partner with organizations to protect the local wildlife. More information on Rocky Mountaineer’s commitment to sustainability is available online.

“We appreciate and are excited about the recognition of Best Sustainable Train Journey from Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2021,” said Steve Sammut, president and CEO of Rocky Mountaineer. “Our team is passionate about improving our sustainability and supporting local communities in the areas where we travel. This year, our team selected two causes to support: reducing hunger in the communities where we work around the world; and protecting wildlife along the spectacular routes where our trains journey. These causes are in addition to our commitment to diverting 90% of waste from across our operations from the landfill, and to continuously decreasing our carbon emissions over the long term.”

The Rocky Mountaineer team support the causes it is passionate about through fundraising, in-kind donations, and volunteer activities. Each year, the company honours its team members’ employment anniversaries by contributing to Tree Canada’s National Greening Program. To date, more than 13,500 trees have been planted with these contributions.

“Best in Travel 2021 champions people, places and organizations that are making travel a force for good, all the more essential in a year when COVID-19 has disrupted and deprioritized travel,” Lonely Planet CEO Luis Cabrera said. “Best in Travel 2021 reflects how travel contributes to sustainability, community and inclusivity and showcases how we can best explore the world responsibly.”
